From school to student accommodation

The problem

Hidden between the greenery, not far from the centre of Alkmaar, a former school building has been converted into temporary accommodation for students and first-time buyers. 43 housing units have been created by separating the classroom with prefab partition walls.

A couple of years ago, housing corporation Woonwaard bought the former school building in Bergerweg, which was largely empty, and put it on the demolition list. Redevelopment projects in the area did not really get off the ground however, because of difficult market conditions as well as other factors. In consultation with, among others, hogeschool InHolland and Medisch Centrum Alkmaar (which employs a great many students), the corporation decided to refurbish the building and use it as student accommodation.

The solution

The speed of completion was also important. By applying fast Faay walls, type IW200/VP70, it was possible to complete the project within a short deadline. The 40cm wide and 70mm thick VP70 panels have a top layer of plasterboard and a solid core of flax straw. They are easy to handle and light, but nevertheless vandal proof, extremely suitable therefore for use in sectors that are susceptible to vandalism. Party wall type IW200 consists of two panels VP70 with a 20mm anchorless cavity filled with 40mm stone wool. The IW200 has excellent fire-resisting and sound insulating properties and is fast and easy to use.
